Harvest Algoma is thrilled to announce that it has officially been registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) — a major milestone in the organization’s mission to build a more food-secure Algoma region.
This designation is more than a paperwork achievement. It is recognition of the impact Harvest Algoma has already made in the community, and it opens the door to even more. With charitable status, Harvest Algoma can now issue official tax receipts to donors, making it easier than ever for individuals, businesses, and foundations to support local food security — and see their generosity go further.
Harvest Algoma is on pace to rescue and redistribute more than 500,000 pounds of food this year, supporting 71 community agencies, programs, and food banks, as well as thousands of community members across the Algoma region. Through programs like Every Breakfast Counts, Harvest Algoma delivered more than 10,500 meals to children. Charitable status will help accelerate that work, unlocking new grant funding, corporate partnerships, and community giving opportunities that were not previously accessible.
“For a lot of people, $25 a month is about what they’d spend on coffee, money that’s gone before you remember spending it. Put that same $25 toward Harvest Algoma instead, and it becomes 50 pounds of food, month after month, for families in Algoma who need it,” says Executive Director, David Thomson.
This milestone comes as Harvest Algoma continues to grow, expanding initiatives like Meals by Harvest, its food-based social enterprise, and deepening its presence across Northern Ontario’s food security and social enterprise sector.
With charitable status now official, Harvest Algoma invites the community — individuals, local businesses, and organizations alike — to join in this next chapter by donating, volunteering, or partnering to help rescue more food and reach more families across Algoma.
Harvest Algoma Inc. is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under Charitable Registration Number 798374435RR0001, effective July 23, 2026.
Donations made through the Harvest Algoma website are now processed through Canada Helps, allowing donors to automatically receive an official charitable tax receipt. Donations can be made at harvestalgoma.ca/donate.
Harvest Algoma is a regional food resource centre dedicated to rescuing and redistributing surplus food to community members experiencing food insecurity.
