Harvest Algoma began as an initiative of the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma, born from a commitment to combat food insecurity. In 2018, the former Canadian Croatian Hall was transformed into a bustling Food Resource Centre. Our Centre\u2019s coolers and kitchen enable us to rescue perishable food and distribute them to where they\u2019re needed most.<\/p>\n

In 2023, the baton was passed to the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN), a division of Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC). As of September 2025, Harvest Algoma incorporated as a standalone not-for-profit organization with a central mission to address food insecurity through food rescue and distribution.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not just distributing food; we\u2019re empowering lives. Our facilities, including a warehouse, large commercial kitchen, and greenhouses allow us to support over 70 local non-profit agencies and programs. Lauren Moran, our community enterprise manager, has a B.Sc. and sustainable agriculture and food systems as well as a B.A. in community economic and social development. Her role at Harvest Algoma perfectly blends her educational background in the development and execution of Meals by Harvest, our social enterprise that touches on the importance of maintaining and strengthening our local food systems from an environmental, economic, and social justice perspective. Being interested in exploring alternative growing methods, Lauren has also introduced soilless growing systems to the mix which she enjoys experimenting with and teaching our staff, volunteers, and clients about.<\/p>\n
