1. What does Harvest Algoma do?

Harvest Algoma transforms lives through food by rescuing and distributing nutritious food to over 70 agencies across the Algoma district. It also offers a line of frozen, oven-ready meals and baked goods to purchase. Harvest Algoma’s programming focuses on reducing food waste and increasing access to food for community members most in need. 

2. Where is Harvest Algoma located?

It is located at 446 Second Line East, Sault Ste. Marie, ON and is accessible by car, bike, or public transit.

3. What are the hours of operation?

The front agency entrance, accessible to our partner agencies such as food banks, food pantries, and social serivce agencies, is open from 9am-4pm, Monday through Friday. The Meals by Harvest storefront, located at the east side of the building, is open from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday.

4. What does “Meals by Harvest” mean?

“Meals by Harvest” refers to the line of frozen, oven-ready meals and baked goods prepared by Harvest Algoma staff and volunteers. These meals, along with desserts and basked goods, are made with rescued food and sold to support the program’s operations. The storefront also stocks a variety of locally produced products including honey from Red Roof Honey, St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters products, Cabajan Kitchen hot sauces, and Fallen Leaves Maple products. 6. Who can access food from Harvest Algoma?

Harvest Algoma’s model differs from traditional foodbanks in that it doesn’t offer emergency food access directly to the public. Representatives of our agency partners, including food banks, food pantries, and social services agencies are able to access food resources on behalf of their clients. To apply to become a partner agency, visit the agency sign-up page and submit a request.

7. How do I get food support from Harvest Algoma?

To access emergency food support, you can visit one of Harvest Algoma’s partner organizations, such as the Salvation Army Food Bank or SOYA (Save Our Young Adults) during scheduled hand-out times. For a full list of emergency food access points and their schedules, visit https://harvestalgoma.ca/food/ and scroll to the bottom of the page. These agencies help distribute food and meals to those in need. Other agencies whose caseworkers serve their clients directly include Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Community Living Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Children’s Aid Society, Nogdawindamin, and many more. You can also reach out to Harvest Algoma directly for guidance on where to go based on your location and situation.

8. What types of food are available in the food resource centre?

The types of food available in Harvest Algoma’s resource centre vary depending on what has been rescued from local grocers and food retailers. Items available may include fresh produce, dairy, frozen goods, dry pantry items, and bread products.

9. How often can I receive food from Harvest Algoma?

Frequency of food access depends on the partner agency or program you’re accessing. Some may provide food weekly, while others offer support based on need. It’s best to check with the specific agency for their schedule.

10. Is there a cost for receiving food or meals?

No, food support is provided free of charge to our partner agencies to distribute to those in need. However, if you are able and wish to support the program, voluntary donations are always welcome. “Meals by Harvest” is a separate program that offers food for purchase with all proceeds going directly towards supporting Harvest Algoma’s ongoing food security and food rescue programming.

11. How is the food used after it’s rescued?

After rescue, the food is carefully sorted, stored, and distributed to partner agencies or used to prepare nutritious meals. This ensures that surplus food reaches those in need while reducing waste. Any rescued food that is not fit for consumption is either composted (i.e. fruits and vegetables) or disposed of accordingly.

12. What are the requirements for renting Harvest Algoma’s kitchen?

To rent the kitchen at Harvest Algoma, you can reach out to info@harvestalgoma.ca. The cost is $30/hour for non-profits and $35/hour for businesses with a minimum booking of 3 for a non-recurring session. Renters are required to have a certificate of insurance, and must follow all applicable health and safety regulations. Reduced rates are available for those renting on a recurring basis. 13. Can I volunteer with Harvest Algoma?

Yes! Harvest Algoma welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds. Whether you’re an individual, student, retiree, or part of a group, your time and support can make a meaningful difference in the community. To apply, visit harvestalgoma.ca/food and click the “volunteer application” button.

14. What kind of volunteer roles are available?

Volunteers can help with sorting and packaging food, preparing meals in the kitchen, baking, gardening in the greenhouse, supporting events, or assisting with deliveries and basic admin tasks.

15. Do I need any experience to volunteer?

No previous experience is required to volunteer with Harvest Algoma. All volunteers receive training and guidance to help them succeed in their roles. Whether you’re new to volunteering or have skills to share, everyone is welcome to contribute.

16. Can families or groups volunteer together?

Yes, families, friends, school groups, and workplaces are encouraged to volunteer together. Group volunteering is a meaningful way to build teamwork, give back to the community, and learn more about food security. 17. Does Harvest Algoma grow its food?

Yes, Harvest Algoma grows some of its food in an on-site greenhouses and gardens. This fresh produce is used in meal preparation and food distribution, supporting food security and sustainability efforts.

18. What is the greenhouse used for?

The greenhouse is used to grow fresh produce year-round, support educational programs, and provide hands-on learning about sustainable food practices. It also helps supplement rescued food by providing hyper-locally grown produce for our food resource centre.

19. How can I donate food or money to support the program?

You can donate money online by visiting harvestalgoma.ca/donate or visiting in person. Food donations can be dropped off at their location during business hours.

20. How else can you support Harvest Algoma?

In addition to volunteering or donating, you can support Harvest Algoma by hosting a food drive, spreading awareness on social media, purchasing from the Meals by Harvest storefront, or partnering through your workplace or community group.
